The horizontal board with Chinese characters: The Gate of Great Success hangs right in the middle of the gate and holds significant value and meaning. The term " Great Success" originates from Mencius’ words while commenting on Confucius: Confucius is a set of great successes. Mencius praised Confucius as a great successor for gathering all knowledge and good characters of the Sages and Saints
The horizontal board is in the shape of a rectangular with the upper two corners beveled. It has three bordered sides and is coated with lacquer. On its surface, there are 25 black Chinese characters, with three large Chinese characters "門 成 大" carved in the center. Reading from right to left, it means The Gate of Great Success.
On the right side are small characters “in the 8th lunar month, Autumn, in the year Canh Tuất, the 2nd year of reign title Thần Vũ of King Lý Tông (1070), was built by the King’ order”, on the left side: “In the middle of winter, in the Mậu Tý year, the third year of Đồng Khánh reign title (1888) was restored”. This board reconfirmed the date of construction of the Văn Miếu: 1070 and provides evidence for the promotion of education and the importance of talent in our nation. Besides that, the information engraved on the board is valuable and useful material for researching the Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám landmark.
