Stele records of Doctoral laureates of Ất Mùi royal exam (1475)

Erection time: on 15th of 8th Lunar month of 15th Hồng Đức reign title (1484) 

Size of stele: 154cm in height, 119cm in width, 18cm in thickness.

Shape: Flat, stone gray color 

Pediment of the stele has an arched frame decorated with curling clouds and the sun. The rectangular body of the stele is engraved with the text in ancient Chinese; the edges of the stele are decorated with flowers and leaves. The base of the stele is shaped like a tortoise with its head tilted high and forward, a wide mouth with two fangs, the large protruding eyes, oval and bulging, the tortoise’s shell is not engraved, and tortoise’s legs have five claws.

In the year 1484, King Lê Thánh Tông began to erect stone steles to record the name of doctoral laureates. Out of the 10 steles erected in the first phase, 7 are still preserved at Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám. Stele of Doctoral laureates of Ất Mùi royal exam in Hồng Đức reign (1475), is one of those 7 steles. On 15th day of 3rd Lunar month of Hồng Đức VI (1475) a National examination was held, attracting more than 3,000 candidates. Forty three of them succeeded in passing the four rounds to take part in the Royal examination. On the 11th day of the 5th lunar month, the King sat in the Kính Thiên Palace and set a topic for the winners to write essays. This examination was the fifth under the Restored Lê Dynasty. On the basis of the essays, the king rated the participants according to different categories. Thus, Vũ Tuấn Chiêu became Trạng nguyên (1st-grade laureate). Ông Nghĩa Đạt became Bảng nhãn (2nd-grade laureate). Cao Quýnh became Thám hoa (3rd-grade laureate).

The 2nd-class doctoral laureates there were 13 persons. The 3rd-class doctoral laureates there were 27 persons. The text composed by Academician Lê Ngạn Tuấn (title: Mẫn sự Tá lang), who got the doctoral laureate in the examination in 1472.
