In the Spring of the year of Mậu Tuất, a Royal examination was held, drawing the Confucian scholars, winners of the interprovincial examination. Duke Trịnh Miên was the Chief Examiner; Vice – Minister of Military Affairs, Marquis Vũ Miên was the Secondary Examiner; and Academician Phạm Bá Ưng was the Acting Supervisor. After the fourth part of the examination, 4 persons were selected to become 3rd- class.
