In the Spring of the year of Mậu Tuất, His Majesty ordered that a Royal examination should be held for Confucian scholars across the country. He appointed Đặng Đình Tướng as Chief Examiner; Procurator, baron Trương Công Giai as Secondary Examiner and Vice – Minister of Finance, Baron Lê Anh Tuấn and Vice – Minister of the Mandarinate, Baron Nguyễn Mậu Áng as Supervisors. These individuals, together with other concerned mandarins, monitored the examination.

Out of more than 3000 participants, 17 were selected as winners: 1 candidate became 1st – class, 2 candidates became 2nd – class, 14 candidates became 3rd – class.
