In the 3rd Lunar month of the Spring of the year of Nhâm Thìn (reign title: Vĩnh Thịnh VIII), a Royal examination was held in accordance with the set regulations. It was overseen by Duke Trịnh Hoàn as Chief Examiner; by the Minister of Justice, Count Nguyễn Thế Bá as Secondary Examiner; and by the Vice – Minister of the Mandarinate, Viscount Nguyễn Đương Bao and the Vice - Minister of Public Works, Viscount Nguyễn Danh Dự as Supervisors; together with other concerned mandarins.

The examination drew more than 3000 participants and 17 of them were selected as winners. On the 5th day of the 6th Lunar month, they were rated by His Majesty himself. As a result, 1 candidate became 2nd – class, 16 candidates became 3rd – class.
