The decorative patterns on the edge of the stele are lotus, chrysanthemums, tea flowers, and peonies, with leaves and flowers in a harmonious arrangement. At the bottom of the stele are adorned with continuous rows of lotus motifs, and there are delicate thread-like lines added on the petals. The tortoise with a slightly retracted neck, a horizontally level head, protruding eyes, and a well-defined carved snout. The tortoise shell is slightly curved, with a hexagonal pattern engraved on it, and there is a small ridge running along the spine in the middle, which becomes thicker at the joint of the back.
Stele of Doctoral laureates of Mậu Tuất royal exam of reign title: Quang Hưng 21 (1598) contains significant historical, cultural, and educational values. The stele name was scripted in the ancient Chinese seal style (Triện), commonly used in the official documents of the royal court and calligraphy art, with high artistic value. The inscriptions were written by Nguyễn Quang Đắc (title: Cẩn sự lang đại phu, Trung thư giám Chính tự, Điển Lộc nam), and Nguyễn Quang Độ (title: Quang tiến Thận Lộc đại phu, Kim Quang môn Đãi chiếu, kiêm Triện dịch thái hàm, Quế Lan nam).
The inscription on the stele of Doctoral laureates of Mậu Tuất royal exam (1598) clearly states that this was the second examination held during the reign of Emperor Lê Trung hưng. It records the names of the examination's organizing committee, which includes high-ranking officials such as: Duke Trịnh Đỗ (title: Thái úy Ngạn quận công) as the Chief-examiner; Procurator, Count Lê Trạc Tú (title: Ngự sử đài Đô Ngự sử) as Secondary Examiner; and Vice-Ministers of Rites as Supervisors. The Emperor himself read and rated the examination papers. Nguyễn Duy Thì had demonstrated all of his skills and expertise to the examiners, who are both knowledgeable and experienced. He had surpassed numerous contestants to become one of the five individuals whose names were on the gold board and stone stele of this academic examination.
