Stele records of Doctoral laureates of Tân Mùi royal exam (1511)

Erection time: on 15th of 3th Lunar month of 5th Hồng Thuận V (1513)

Size of stele: 166cm in height, 124cm in width, 20cm in thickness. 

Shape: Flat, stone gray color

The pediment of the stele is decorated with the pattern "Sacred Clouds and Gems". the edges of the stele is adorned with flowering vines. At the top of the stele is the stele name which was scripted in the ancient Chinese seal style (Triện) with the height of 15cm. The tortoise is crafted with raised head, large eyes, prominent nostrils, sharp-clawed feet, a smooth and raised shell with vertical ridges along the shell.

Among the 82 doctoral steles at Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám, 13 steles were erected during the early Lê Dynasty. Among them, Stele of Doctoral laureates of Tân Mùi royal exam reign title of Hồng Thuận III (1511) marked a change in the art of decorating steles during the early Lê Dynasty.

The royal examination was held in the Spring of the year of Tân Mùi under the reign title of Hồng Thuận III (1511). According to established practice, the Ministry of Rites invited Confucian students to the capital city for the contest. As a result, 47 candidates passed the exam. On the 17th of the April lunar month, King Lê Tương Dực set the topic for the required essay in the final round of the exam, which dealt with the fundamentals of governance and rated the laureates after having read their papers thoroughly. Subsequently, Hoàng Nghĩa Phú became Trạng nguyên (1st - grade laureate) Trần Bảo Tín became Bảng nhãn (2nd - grade laureate) and Vũ Duy Chu became Thám hoa (3rd - grade laureate) , and Eight other persons 2nd-class; and other 35 other persons 3rd-class. They had all been appointed by the court to various positions within the government system and had made significant contributions to society.
